The U-Dting, or, 'Taep U-Dting', is a Lanna Animist Charm in the form of an Elephant, found in most proliferation, around the border areas to Burma. The U-Dting is usually made from carved wood or ivory, stone or cast metal, but can also be made from Sacred powders too. The elephant is ridden by any of a number of different humanoid images, ranging from Buddha images, Lady-Horse Lovers, Paya Khao Kham )Khun Phaen Lanna),to In Koo entwined lovers, riding on the back of the U-Dting elephant. Taep U-Dting is a Burmese Legend of a Bodhisattva Prince called U-Dting, who was taken from his Parents, and had to be raised in the forest with a Lersi Hermit Sage.
The Hermit Sage taught all of his secrets and sorcery spells to Pra U-Dting, who learned to master the Art of commanding herds of with his will. The Prince U-Dting then returned to the city of his birth, and ruled it with great wisdom. He won all of his wars and battles, and conquered all of his enemies. Because of the Victorious Merits of the U-Dting Legend, the Sorcerors and Wizards of olden days created the U-Dting amulets, carved in the image of Pra Taep U-Dting riding upon the back of an elephant, sometimes alone, sometimes playing music, and most popularly, on the back of an elephant with a beautiful maiden seated behind him in attendance.
More often than not, the U-Dting amulet is mostly seen carved into the form of an elephant with a man and a woman embracing and kissing on its back. The Pra U-Dting is mostly made from carved sacred wood, ivory, but is also seen as cast brazen metal loi ongk statuette, and even carved stone, and in earthen clay form. The Pra U-Dting is generally considered to be a powerful Metta Maha Niyom Maha Sanaeh Charm, but also Kaa Khaay magic, for profitable commerce. The symbolism of Pra U-Dting returning home with a beautiful Maiden by his side on the elephant, carries the meaning 'Bpai Hneung Glab Sorng', which means 'to set forth alone, come back as a couple' (Maha Sanaeh Seduction).
Also, it means 'one leaves, two return' (Kaa Khaay Prosperous Commerce). There is a tradition amongst the Tai Yai people to give the Pra Taep U-Dting amulet to bride and groom in wedding ceremonies, as a symbol to increase the mutual love between the newlyweds. The Pra Taep U-Dting amulet is usually made using a very long and complex set of formulas with a large empowermnent ritual performed in the deep forests, and is a very complex ritual to perform. If they approach then they will be helpless against the attraction power of the Palad U-Dting/In Koo. If it is worn as a love charm or carried on ones person, then it will cause everyone the wearer meets to feel friendly and compassionate towards them.
The U-Dting should even make others fall in love with the wearer if Bucha is made to the U-Dting, and this request is asked for in exchange for Bucha. Business will flourish, money and gifts will flow in, good fortune will come, and life without disturbances. The U-Dtiing, is a sacred Love and Metta Maha Sanaeh Talisman which has been used by ancient folk for thousands of years, and shows no sign of disappearing soon, for its popularity as a love charm is still as evident as it ever was.
